What Is Skin Resurfacing?
Skin resurfacing is a rejuvenating treatment that works by removing the uppermost layer of tissue, where visible signs of sun damage or scarring are present. Concerns often treated with this technique include sunspots (or age spots), uneven skin tone, dullness, textural irregularities, scarring, lines and wrinkles, and thin skin on the face, neck, and chest.
There are a number of methods of skin resurfacing, all of which have advantages and disadvantages. At Form Med Spa in Cottonwood Heights, we perform laser skin resurfacing with the CO2 platform from Candela. This type of CO2 laser resurfacing uses fractional technology, which means that the device harnesses one of the most effective types of laser energy, Carbon Dioxide, and controls its aggressiveness by fractionating, or separating, light into pinpoints.

FAQs
Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Permanent?
After CO2 treatment, it is possible to enjoy younger-looking skin for several years. Obviously, the natural aging process continues. However, there are ways that you can maintain the beauty that is achieved during your appointment. Because we know that UV light degrades collagen and leads to brown spots, wrinkles, and other problems, sun protection is one of the first recommendations that is made to any person interested in preserving a youthful appearance.
Can Laser Resurfacing Remove Acne Scars?
Many people interested in decreasing the appearance of acne scars are able to do so with fractional laser resurfacing. This treatment penetrates the uppermost layer of tissue, removing tiny areas in a controlled manner. As a response to the perceived wounding of the skin, the body floods the area with collagen, the healing protein that firms and support the epidermis.
How Long Does The Treatment Last?
The treatment itself requires a few hours of time in the office. This is because we want to provide sufficient time for topical anesthetic or any sedative medication to take full effect prior to commencing with the procedure. Direct treatment time is usually about an hour. If a sedative has been given, we may monitor you for a short time once your procedure is complete. It may also be necessary to have someone drive you home.
Is Laser Treatment Safe?
Fractional laser resurfacing doesn’t affect 100% of the skin’s surface during the procedure. It creates tiny columns from which tissue is removed, and leaves areas in between untouched. The advantage of this technique is improved comfort during treatment and a faster recovery after.
With CO2 we achieve maximum results in a single visit, even for those with advanced signs of aging and sun damage. For added safety and efficacy, this laser platform has been developed with variable treatment modes.
Does it Hurt?
Patient comfort is a priority during laser resurfacing treatments. As a pre-treatment, topical numbing medication may be applied to the skin, or other desensitizing modalities may be used.
What To Expect After CO2 Laser Resurfacing?
Because medication takes time to wear off, the post-treatment effects may not be noticed for several hours, or possibly until the next day. Most patients describe a sunburned sensation after they regain sensation in the treatment area. This should not be painful, but may be slightly uncomfortable. What you want to prepare for is the swelling that develops within about 24 hours after laser resurfacing. Some patients describe this side effect as the most uncomfortable though, again, not painful. Swelling may be substantial but lasts only a few days.
Dryness and flaking are expected and need to be controlled by following our post-treatment instructions. It is necessary to stay out of direct sunlight and to use only approved products on your skin until full healing has occurred. A follow-up visit may be scheduled within the first few days after laser skin resurfacing in order to monitor recovery.
