CoolSculpting

The concept behind CoolSculpting was discovered by accident. Two Harvard scientists were researching kids eating popsicles and the formation of dimples in their cheeks. They found that the cold from the popsicles was freezing the fat. The result was the formation of dimples, which only occur in the absence of fat. They researched further and found that fat cells freeze and die at a higher temperature than other tissue cells. The result was CoolSculpting.

In a CoolSculpting session, the patient sits in our angled treatment chair and the CoolSculpting panels are positioned over the treatment area. The panels apply light suction that draws the skin, underlying tissue, and fat up between the two cooling panels. The temperature is set to the freezing point of the fat cells, and the CoolSculpting panels deliver the cooling down into the skin and tissue. The fat cells freeze and the body begins the process of eliminating them. As the session progresses, we repeat this process several times across the treatment area. A total session takes from one to three hours, depending on the size of the treatment area. CoolSculpting crystallizes and kills from 20 to 25 percent of the fat cells in the treated area.

The cost of your CoolSculpting session is variable depending on the area you’re having treated. Larger areas require various applications of the CoolSculpting panels and cooling. Smaller areas may be able to be completed in a single positioning. The FDA has cleared CoolSculpting for the treatment of visible fat bulges under the chin, the thighs, abdomen and flanks, along the bra line, back fat, underneath the buttocks, and the upper arms. CoolSculpting was approved first for the flanks in 2010. As time has gone by, the FDA has approved subsequent areas, adding back fat, bra line fat, and fat underneath the buttocks in 2016. To date, over 6 million CoolSculpting procedures have been performed worldwide, with studies on safety described in over 100 clinical publications.

This procedure is completely non-invasive and safe. You can return to normal activities immediately following your procedure. There is no recovery or downtime.

Once the fat cells in the treatment area are frozen, they die and are then naturally eliminated from the body. These fat cells are gone for good. CoolSculpting is not weight loss; it is fat loss. This procedure removes about one quarter of the fat in areas that don’t respond well to diet changes or exercise, such as the abdomen.

CoolSculpting is meant for people who are at or very near their ideal weight, but have some isolated pockets of fat that don’t respond to dietary changes or exercise.
